SPECIAL EXPERIMENT - FORTUNE MEMORIES
(2002, 45:11, private release)
'Progressive Instrumental Project' says the promotional info sheet with this
pleasant CD. Nothing wrong here, as I even can add words like 'well played'
and 'crisp production'. Special Experiment is headed by the gifted keyboard
player Dzidek Marcinkiewicz. No wonder all sorts of well balanced
synth-sounds and fast solos whirl around you in the eight tracks. Although
heavily based on the keys, I don't dare to call this an electronic album.
That's caused by the splendid guitar riffs of mister Frank Tienemann. This
guy is not someone who contributes an occasional chord to a song, but takes
the leading solo spot very often. A very good thing as it takes the overall
level of the compositions higher and justifies a label like progressive ROCK
music. One listens to a real band because bass and drums are also played by
humans instead of machines. With Dzidek being a great and inspired conductor
of the sole 'machines' on the album I can wholeheartedly give a thumbs up
for "Fortune Memories". Personal faves that shine out through tickly
melodies include "King of twilight", "Dark angel" and "Centre Opli Fuga".
Finally some references (this might be slightly obscure ones): the album
"God, Sex & Money" by Michael West with a nice piece of guitars thrown in
for good measure, and the magnificent "Aerial View"-disc by American band
Gamalon.
